Archie is six years old, about 60 pounds. He’s very active, loves chasing the tennis ball and pretty much any toy you’ll throw for him. He’s highly intelligent, loves belly rubs and ear scratches. He has a big personality that’s bound to make you laugh. Commands he knows: Sit, stay, down, come, wait, back up, heel. He knows how to bow. Out, leave it, enough, done, free, off, down. He knows how to pick up his leash if it’s dropped – Just point at it and say get it. He’ll pick up sunglasses and keys with that same command and hand it to you. He knows “clean up” if any food drops or spills. He’s potty trained, not destructive, doesn’t get separation anxiety. He loves to crawl up on the couch or bed and take a nap after a long day. He is not good with cats. He would be fine to be in a home with other dogs. He’s can be reactive with dogs outside of the home, especially when on a leash. He is fine with dogs in his doggy daycare. He is e-collar trained. No health issues. He does take 300mg of gabapentin and 100mg Of trazodone on occasion per the vets recommend it helps me not be as on edge if there is company coming over. He’s also on once monthly simparica trio. Neutered and up-to-date on vaccines.
He does have a bite history with adult humans, none serious. The bites have occurred when there has been what he perceives as a threat to his pack (e.g., someone unfamiliar tries to pet him) or when someone within his pack invades his space (e.g., he’s in his bed sleeping and doesn’t want to move, and you reach in to try to force him to). Biting always comes with warning signs, growl, lip raised. He never snaps without warning. He was sent to a board-and-train program last summer to help these issues. He made great progress but the behaviors aren’t completely extinct. With proper introduction over time he is able to be OK with new people. He loves anyone that will throw the tennis ball for him, which is a great way for him to form new bonds.
He would do best in a home with acreage or a large backyard for playing ball. Cat free, child free. Not a lot of comings and goings of strangers. He needs humans that set firm boundaries and follow through, but are also very loving. Familiar with the breed. Consistent with maintaining his training and skills he knows. He’s not the dog to take to go get lunch or run your errands or to the dog park. He should not be approached by people he doesn’t have a bond with. He needs a quiet, peaceful home where he can know what to expect. He’s very manageable without the unpredictability of children and with the e-collar. He will be an awesome loyal dog for the right people in the right environment.
