My name is Chopper. I am a 1 year & 7 month old Border Collie (possible mix) and am looking for a lifelong home. I have a short, silky coat and am a healthy 50 lbs. I am extremely sweet, loving and some say highly intelligent. I have worked with a few trainers and respond to most common commands:
Sit, lie down, up, shake, wait, hi five, bed, “house”/crate, catch, go to “camp” (I get excited and go to my leash and/or door), walk, treat, stay, leave it, drop it (with treat), Pool(with treat), towel, bed, house, come(best with treat), gentle (so no alligator teeth with treats), and up/down like a push-up.
I am crate trained and only go potty outside (mostly in my backyard). I recently started to mark pees on walks in the neighborhood. I love to play fetch, tug of war and play with all my toys. I can also catch toys thrown in the air. With some more proper training, I could be a great agility dog!
I am Loyal! I follow my family from room to room throughout the day. I lay by their feet and lean into them when they are standing cooking in the kitchen. I enjoy laying half of my body over the laps of my family while I chew on a favorite toy.
I love other dogs and have gone to doggie play groups at the kennel 1-2 week since I was a little puppy. I share my current home with an indoor/ outdoor cat. I am gentle with him, as he knows how to hold his own, and I have learned not to push his buttons. It is fun to sit and watch him like a hawk.
My family has a large yard, and I have enjoyed the space to run! They say I have herding and “work dog” instincts, though I have never tried it.
I do get protective of my family when unfamiliar males get too close (I will snarl so they know to keep their distance). I am also “excitable” and full of energy when overstimulated.
I walk well on leash with a harness- not because of pulling, but because I would stay and sniff for a long time. My family will slowly count “1,2,3 – let’s go!” and I usually hop forward and resume our long walk. In my Free time, I like to chase birds, helicopters and planes & roam in my backyard. I love to go onto the top step of the pool for a daily dip → I have been learning to sit on a towel before entering the house.
Also, I would always welcome more activity, as border collies usually do. One concern is that I can appear at ease, relaxing and then if I am surprised, I can suddenly turn and nip (this has happened a handful of times). We love Chopper!!! We wouldn’t want to re-home him, but we know it’s best for him.
We are not the right fit because we have homeschool families with children varying in ages (6- 16) that come over frequently to play or have school. We have a pool and entertain our own family frequently. We also have started seeing our physical therapy clients at the house for treatment. Chopper would do well with somebody who has a large amount of land and is experienced with Border Collies.
