How to Adopt

What is the

Adoption Process

The first step in the adoption process is to complete an Adoption Application and have it approved prior to inquiring about or meeting any dogs. If you have an approved Adoption Application that is over one year old, please fill out a new application. If you have an approved application that is less than one year old and want to inquire about one of our dogs, send an email to adoptions@norcalbcrescue.org with the name of the dog you are interested in.

All adopters will be required to sign an Adoption Agreement at the time of adoption. Please open this PDF file and read it carefully. If you have any questions about the adoption agreement, let us know prior to an adoption appointment.

Information on

Adoption Fees

Fees are typically based on a dog’s listed age. We have set the adoption fees at the minimal amount to sustain our rescue. We appreciate any additional donation you are able to offer. Thank you.

  • Puppies (under 6 months):  $425.00
    • Puppies under 6m are too young to be spayed/neutered, (altered) and will be adopted with a contract that requires the new owner to have the dog altered at the appropriate age (age to be determined by owner’s veterinarian). In addition to the adoption fee, there is a $75.00 spay/neuter deposit. The spay/neuter deposit will be refunded upon proof of the dog being altered.
  • 6 months to 6 years:  $350.00
  • 6 years and older:  $250.00
  • We may also host special needs dogs (e.g., deaf or partially blind dogs).  Fees for these dogs are not based on age but are determined individually.

Any dog over six months old adopted from NCBCRA will have been spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

Learn about

Veterinary Needs

The veterinary needs of dogs that come into rescue vary, but as a minimum we see each dog is made current on its rabies vaccination as well as canine distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvovirus (DHPPv) vaccinations. Depending on the veterinary clinic, this core set may also include a vaccine for leptospirosis (DHLPPv). We observe for indications of parasites (roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, tapeworm as well as giardia and coccidia) and will treat with the appropriate dewormer and medication. We have a heartworm test performed on each dog and if found positive we treat the dog and obtain a negative test result before making the dog available for adoption.

When you adopt a dog, we will provide you with the information we have on its background and medical history. As dogs come to us from a variety of locations, often as strays picked up by animal shelters, this information may be limited. Other than what we have had performed while in rescue, we cannot provide any guarantee of the dog’s history or medical condition. Nor can we predict or guarantee a dog’s behavior.

About NCBCRA

Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions (NCBCRA) is an all volunteer group who give their time and resources to place border collies in need into new homes where they will be loved and well cared for. No compensation is provided to our volunteers. 100% of fees paid for dog adoptions go to offset organization expenses and for the care of our dogs.

The bulk of our costs are for food and canine veterinarian care. Virtually every dog we bring into rescue requires some medical care. Routine medical costs include rabies vaccinations, DHPP vaccinations, heartworm tests, heartworm preventative medication, microchipping, deworming, spays & neuters. We also incur costs to treat a variety of illness and disease, ranging from bacterial infections to prolonged and expensive medication for existing heartworm. There are surgical costs for major accidents, as well as less severe, but perhaps more frequent needs such as a broken tooth extraction or removal of a stomach obstruction from chewing on wood! While we have established a network of veterinarians who kindly reduce fees for us, the sheer scope of possible illness and injury keeps us forever in need of financial assistance.
