About Us

Let us introduce ourselves

About NCBCRA

Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions (NCBCRA) is an all volunteer group who give their time and resources to place border collies in need into new homes where they will be loved and well cared for. No compensation is provided to our volunteers. 100% of fees paid for dog adoptions go to offset organization expenses and for the care of our dogs.

The bulk of our costs are for food and canine veterinarian care. Virtually every dog we bring into rescue requires some medical care. Routine medical costs include rabies vaccinations, DHPP vaccinations, heartworm tests, heartworm preventative medication, microchipping, deworming, spays & neuters. We also incur costs to treat a variety of illness and disease, ranging from bacterial infections to prolonged and expensive medication for existing heartworm. There are surgical costs for major accidents, as well as less severe, but perhaps more frequent needs such as a broken tooth extraction or removal of a stomach obstruction from chewing on wood! While we have established a network of veterinarians who kindly reduce fees for us, the sheer scope of possible illness and injury keeps us forever in need of financial assistance.

Our Mission

Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions, Inc (aka NCBCRA or norcalbcresue.org) is comprised of volunteers who give of their time, energy, and resources to help place border collies into new homes where they will be well cared for and loved. Our goals are to save the lives of border collies and place them into safe and nurturing environments. We strive to prevent uncontrolled breeding via a spay and neuter adoption policy and we educate prospective border collie owners on the benefits and potential difficulties of border collie ownership.

Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions is a California based non-profit corporation with 501(c)(3) tax exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service. As a tax exempt non-profit, donations made to NCBCRA are tax deductible. While we share common goals with Monterey County based Border Collie Rescue of Northern California, we are legally separate entities. Generally, dogs fostered south of Stockton are listed with BCRNC and dogs fostered from Stockton northward are fostered with us. Please complete an NCBCRA Adoption Application if you have an interest in one of our dogs. If you have an approved application on file with BCRNC let us know and we will request it be forwarded to us. While adoption procedures are similar with our two rescues, please review the requirements of each as they may not be the same in all aspects.

How We Serve

NCBCRA serves an unending supply of abandoned, lost, & mistreated animals. The majority of dogs come to us through animal shelters, but we also help owners directly who can no longer keep their canine companions. We feel the caring for lost, neglected, and abused border collies can best met by those who know and love the breed the most. We do not have a central facility, but rely on non-paid volunteers to administer the rescue and foster dogs in their own homes and to meet with prospective adopters. The individuals who comprise our rescue have many years of experience with border collies and understand their physical and mental needs. Their reward is in knowing one of their canine charges, that might have been put to sleep or left abandoned to fend for itself, has been placed into a loving and caring home.

A successful adoption usually occurs when an owner makes time for their dog and provides the dog with structure and routine. We understand time may be tough to come by in any given day, but regular activity such as taking your dog jogging, to the dog park, or, when feasible, to work go along way to creating that special bond that results in calmness and desired behavior from your dog.

While our focus is on placing border collies as pets, many adopters recognize the talents and devotion inherent in this breed. They work with their dogs to develop them as therapy, herding, and quite often, as agility dogs. These border collie owners look at this effort as an opportunity to participate more fully in their dog’s life.

Annual Expenditures

If you wish to make a 501(c)(3) tax deductible donation, please visit our Donations webpage. Everyone at NCBCRA is a non-paid volunteer. This results in an astoundingly high percentage of your donation being spent directly on the dogs!  Woof!
