Male, 4 – 5 years, 40 lbs
Meet BENJI! He’s about 4-5 years old according to our vets. A beautiful mix of border collie and probably heeler, this sweet boy is looking for his perfect home. BENJI weighs in at just over 40 pounds. He is friendly with everyone he meets. He gets along well with his foster brothers, but tends to get a little jealous when someone else is getting any pets. BENJI would happily settle on being an only dog, but does fine with others too, just don’t be surprised if he tries to wiggle himself in between you and another dog to hog all the love! So, if you have a dog or two that are more sensitive and require more attention, BENJI might not be the dog for you.
BENJI is the definition of Velcro dog- never more than a few feet ahead or behind his foster mom, indoors and out. While out doing farm chores, he walks or quietly jogs alongside while horses are fed and watered. BENJI has no interest in chasing them, he’s just happy to be included. He has not been tested with cats.
BENJI is accustomed to being crated at night, and during the day while mom is at work. When he hears the key in the door though, he’s all wiggles and happy barks until he’s released from the crate to go outside. He’s doing very well with house training, but does require frequent potty breaks and supervision while inside. He’ll start pacing when he needs out and if no one notices, he’ll just go in the house.
The ideal home for BENJI is a country or farm setting where he doesn’t have to be leashed for formal walks. He does ok on a leash, but it’s just not his happy place, and in a farm or outdoor setting, he’s perfect off leash. He has a perfect recall, and sits down for pets as soon as he reaches his mom. He can still be a bit high energy fresh out of the crate, and is learning to keep his paws off people. BENJI is catching on quickly to having nice manners, but will need some reinforcement in keeping his feet down and not jumping up with excitement. With BENJI’s energy level, we recommend a home without small children, as he still has moments of “bull in a China shop” when he’s fresh out of his crate.
BENJI has gotten over his anxiety with car rides, but will still need some positive reinforcement to know that he’s safe and not going back to a kennel or shelter. He’s very trusting and deserves to be shown that car rides are fun, and that he’s never going to be left behind again.
Overall, BENJI is a sweet, outgoing boy. He has the energy to go for walks or runs daily, but has an off switch to relax at home and quiet down for the evening. He hasn’t taken much interest in toys or fetch or anything, he just really wants to be included with whatever his people are doing. We’d love for BENJI to have a home where he’d get lots of outside time with his owner, and with someone who’s spends more time at home than away
