BLAZE is a sweet 6 year old boy looking for his forever loving home; a home with knowledge and experience of embracing fearful dog behavior.
BLAZE is a beautifully marked Border Collie and Australian Shephard mix, black, white and red, weighing approximately 60 lbs. He was under socialized as a puppy and then experienced the trauma of surviving a major fire to his home, property, and community.
BLAZE is sensitive to change and to environments where he feels he has no control. BLAZE wants to trust. He loves to play with people and other dogs, yet he has a high startler response. He is happiest when is has a dog buddy or two, in a calm, quiet, and stable and loving household with a solid routine.
BLAZE has come a long way since coming into rescue. Once trust was built, and a routine established, BLAZE became a snuggle bug and an initiator of play. He loves to be massaged and will gently give you kisses and take treats from your hand. BLAZE will happily join in on singing when encouraged to do so. BLAZE gets along real well with his foster pack mates, he keenly watches and learns from them which rules of the house are reinforced. BLAZE loves to chase balls just as if a young puppy would and he loves to play tug with his pack mates, and explore for bugs. BLAZE must have been point guard dog for his original family’s home, as perimeter checking is important to him. He is always the first to alert you of an intruder in the yard. BLAZE responds well to his name being called, or a whistle, or gentle tap on a window. BLAZE has learned his crate is his safe place. Once he is confident you will return, he will quietly retreat to his crate. BLAZE is very food motivated, but his greatest motivator is gentle praise and affection. He has learned basic commands, will walk well on a lead in calm quiet neighborhood, and is always willing to take a car ride. He is crate trained and has not had any accidents in the house. Just show him ‘the door’ and establish a regular routine for eating, drinking, and relieving himself. BLAZE is more than willing to ‘voice’ when he needs to ‘go out’, and when it’s time to ‘go to bed’. He will sleep in his crate through the night, but if given the choice he prefers to snuggle with you in bed.
BLAZE wants to be a permanent member of a loving dog, person, home. He will be successful if his new dog people are gentle, patient, experienced with fearful dog behavior, and provide lots of human contact; in a home that is slow paced, with a consistent routine, and has another dog (or two) who will welcome him, is willing to share their space (and person), helps him to learn the rules, and desires to be his buddy. BLAZE has a clean bill of health.
