Introducing “MISS MABEL.” Every NCBCRA adoption is special, but here is an opportunity to adopt a truly exceptional little girl. Miss Mabel is a beautiful blue and white smooth-coated border collie, weighing 28 pounds and standing about 17” at the shoulder. She is estimated to be about one year old. She is a well-balanced, muscular little girl with brown inquisitive and curious eyes. Miss Mabel is incredibility social and playful once she gets to know you in familiar surroundings. She is goofy, fun, extremely energetic, sweet, and very curious. She loves to explore the yard on her own, yet mostly stays within eyesight of her humans when outside.
MISS MABEL desires a person / trainer who wants to spend significant time with her and who will continue to train her slowly to reach her true full potential. Her recall is 100% solid even with distractions. On recall (whistle), Mabel will run and jump any obstacle to get to you. She truly knows her person is the most interesting and important thing in her life, and she really wishes to please. In training, Mabel is learning to sit, stay, stand, and down. Her on-leash and off leash training sessions are short and several times a day with positive reinforcement and/or food treat rewards. Currently, Miss Mabel is not overly toy motivated, but her interest is improving. With patience and positive reinforcement training, Miss Mabel could become an excellent sport and/or agility dog; she is fast, agile, and learns very quickly.
Like most high drive young border collies, MABEL excels in a structured environment, and she is quick to learn. That said, she requires consistent supervision, so that she learns what you want her to learn and avoids learning habits you don’t want and may have to untrain. Mabel is very smart and sensitive. So, she needs someone who understands this combination of traits and can work skillfully with them. In her foster home, she learned very quickly to walk on leash inside the backyard and in familiar surroundings. However, when in unfamiliar areas, she becomes nervous and fearful, relying on her person for support and confidence. Her nervousness is improving with thoughtfully paced exposure to new areas and support. Miss Mabel, while on-leash, has shown no aggression toward other dogs. She gets along very well with her foster brother. They will run and play constantly when outside. However, she is possessive and will push and crowd her way between you and another dog. Miss Mabel does not share well and would do best in a single dog home. She has spent time with well-mannered children and loves to play. Miss Mabel has not been exposed to babies. She does display a high drive and has shown “interest” in both squirrels and cats and should live in a cat-free home.
MISS MABEL does extremely well in her dog crate. While in foster care, she has not had any accidents in the house or in her enclosed hard-sided crate. Mabel sleeps soundly and quietly in her crate through the night. When let outside, Mabel will relieve herself on command with positive reinforcement and a food treat reward. In foster care, Mabel can be free in the house. However, she is not allowed to be on any furniture and prefers the security of her crate with the door open. Mabel is very content in her crate, with her chew toy, for down time, to take her meals, and to sleep. Miss Mabel travels calmly and quietly in a hard-sided crate when riding in the car.
MISS MABEL desires a full-time person who will love her with the same intensity she gives back. She is truly an exceptional little girl, a delight to live with and a joy to train.
