MATEO is a 1 year old, 46 pound red, white, and tan rough coat Border collie. His coat is long and soft and his golden eyes are striking. He is a very happy and active boy looking for a family to match his energy and capacity for love.
MATEO loves people and food (the order is up for debate) more than anything else. While he gets along with, and loves running and playing with his foster mates, he mostly wants to be with his people. When out with the other dogs, and his foster dad shows up, Mateo immediately runs to him for acknowledgement, pets, and approval. Fast and athletic, he may be a candidate for agility or some other fun activity to exercise mind and body. He was very popular at the Vet’s office when in for his vaccinations. The staff could not get enough of him.
MATEO is crate and house-trained. He has had no accidents since arriving at his foster home a few weeks ago. He lets us know if we are staying in bed too late, or not paying attention to him when he has to go. Mateo is a smart boy. He is doing well with the sit and crate commands. He does need leash work, and also could do better at not jumping up on people. He has been responding to a hand signal and “Sit” command when he is running towards us. He also used to bolt out of the crate when the door was opened, but has been doing very well with “Wait” and the release “OK.” He is also on high alert around cats. We are therefore looking for a home with no small children as well as a cat-free environment.
All-in-All MATEO has been an excellent house guest. He will do just as well in a home with or without other dogs. The important thing is to keep him engaged, work with him in short, meaningful training sessions, and allow him to be with you as much as possible. His love of people, treats, and desire to please should make those training sessions fun and rewarding. MATEO does travel well in his crate, but has not shown an interest in toys as yet. He loves to chase a ball (he sort of brings it back in your general vicinity), rinse and repeat. He’d really appreciate it if he could snuggle with you on the couch and receive lots of pets. You know he’s all-in when he rolls over to “allow” you to give him belly rubs.
If you are looking for a young, active partner that will be a blast to be around, Mateo may just be the boy for you.
