Female, 3 years 55 lbs.
Meet our SHELBY, a very special girl who has come a long way from her beginnings in rescue. She is ready to find her special person(s) who will provide the home and love she dreams of and certainly deserves, a home at which she can thrive and blossom. SHELBY is coming up on her 3rd birthday (May). She has a medium length silky red and white coat and weighs about 55 lbs. Her golden eyes seem to look into your very soul searching for love.
SHELBY is looking for her person, or perhaps a couple, who has experience with dogs who are a bit reserved around new people. She is a bit slow to warm up, but once that light goes on she will lick your hands as if to say, “Oh, you’re not so bad.” When meeting new people SHELBY must be allowed to warm up to them at her own pace. Some light encouragement doesn’t hurt; take proper steps and it does not take her long to get curious and stay close-by.
SHELBY wants nothing more than to be with you wherever you are. If you are inside she wants to be inside. If she is going outside she wants you to accompany her. Additional confidence building would be beneficial for this girl.
We have found that she is more comfortable meeting people indoors versus outdoors. SHELBY’S “love language” is all about physical touch and sweet talk. When you pet her she will flop over on her back to get belly rubs. After she has gotten to know you, she is a great cuddle bug.
SHELBY has shown no aggressive behavior towards people or other dogs, but does get frightened when other dogs come running up to her. She was also visibly uncomfortable around small children. A quiet home with minimal distractions would be best so SHELBY can excel in her new environment. She is looking a home with one or two people, of whom she can give every bit of her attention and love. SHELBY will give you her all and in return all she asks is that you give her your all. She really aims to please. We are very proud of how far she has come.
SHELBY is house trained. She caught on very quickly to taking care of business in the great outdoors. She’s learned some basic commands like sit, stay (at the door), drop it, leave it, come, lie down, and wait. Since she is food / treat motivated, short training sessions are a lot of fun.
When her foster mom leaves the house, SHELBY settles down and waits for her to return. Her energy level is not super active, but she DOES look forward to her long daily walks. That said, SHELBY is just as content to relax with you as she is excited to go for those long walks. Shelby really loves, loves, loves car rides and she will jump right in. She is a great traveler.
Because SHELBY was quickly attached to her foster mom, she was allowed to run and explore off leash (in safe areas, of course). Her recall has proven to be a reliable 100%. She always has an eye out for you. When walking and exploring off leash she will constantly return to check in with you.
SHELBY loves appropriate chew bones and she does not shred stuffed toys though she’ll sometimes carry one around in her mouth. She does tend to get jealous when her foster siblings get attention because with SHELBY it’s all about her. She does not like to share what she considers hers with her foster siblings. This is another reason we think she would be best as an only dog. SHELBY is not an obnoxious barker however she will sometimes alert bark. While she does not pull on walks, additional leash training would be a benefit.
All in all, SHELBY has made some great progress while in her foster home. And we must stress that SHELBY is still a “work in progress.” With additional confidence building you will see her blossom even more. We are so happy with the hurdles she has already conquered to get to where she is today.
We realize there are many “good” homes out there for these resilient dogs. We are very attached to this girl so we want to find not just a good home, but the “right” home for our SHELBY. We are looking for a person who will be truly dedicated to continuing the work that we have started with her. Someone perhaps retired, with maybe one additional person in the home to provide consistency and stability, who will understand that SHELBY will need time to adjust to a new home and environment. If you have the time, patience and most of all desire to bring out more of SHELBY’S true character, you will realize what a truly amazingly sweet dog she is. If you feel you can give SHELBY the love, training, and support she will need then we would be interested in discussing her further with you.
