ADOPTED Nyla

Female, 5 Months. 28 lbs

NYLA APR 2020

Nyla is approximately 5-months-old and weighs about 28 pounds.  Even with her petite build, she is a very athletic ball of energy.  And talk about athletic: this girl can easily clear a 24” fence with room to spare!  She is a gorgeous jumper.  Nyla is learning good name recognition and is making progress toward a reliable recall.  She gets along well with all of the dogs in her foster home and the dogs she has visited at the home of a family friend.  That said, the older dogs are not so tolerant of her puppy exuberance.  She is always up for playing!!!

Nyla is almost housebroken, and she is crate-trained.  As a super active adolescent border collie puppy, she can be distracted when she goes outside to do her business, especially when there are other dogs to play with.  So, she needs to go outside without her canine pals and to be reminded to “potty” until something happens.  And as a teenaged puppy, she needs to be crated, in a pen, or supervised when she’s indoors, or she’ll find things to do the way all smart and busy puppies will.  The world is her oyster and any and all things are her toys or her snacks.  She will chew things if she has a chance, so she needs to learn what is appropriate for her to chew.  She is definitely treat-motivated and will play with toys—any toy will do–but prefers to chase the other dogs when the family plays in the yard.  She has enjoyed working on the fitness equipment.

Nyla was nervous and submissive when visiting the vet—probably her first time–but during a weekend visit with a family friend she had just met she was fine when she could interact on her own.  She is sensitive to loud noises like garbage trucks and lawn mowers and will need patient and gentle exposure to become more comfortable.  Nyla definitely prefers a harness to a leash/collar and is making good progress with a harness/leash when walking.  She travels well crated in a vehicle.

Nyla will sit when she is asked and is working on duration.  She loves to bounce and leap around her foster mom when she first gets out of her crate or greets her mom in the yard.  So, she will need someone who will train her on calm behaviors. While she could live in a home with another mature dog, she would probably do best as an only dog with someone who can commit to training her and who has experience with young, boisterous border collies.  She would probably not be a good choice for a first-time dog or a first-time border collie person.  She is a lovely girl with a happy-go-lucky attitude, but she will need structure, consistent reinforcement, stimulation, and training to be the best girl she can be. NYLA will need a cat-free environment.

NYLA is up to date on vaccines, heartworm prevention, flea & tick, wormed, and microchipped. As a condition of puppy adoption, she will need to be altered when she reaches approximately 6 months (specific time to be determined by your vet). In addition to the adoption fee, puppy adoption requires a $75 spay/neuter deposit. Upon our receiving the spay/neuter certificate from you, the deposit is refunded. If you have an approved Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions Adoption Application and wish to inquire about NYLA, please email us at Adoptions@norcalbcrescue.org. If you have an approved adoption application with Border Collie Rescue of Northern California let us know and we will request it be forwarded to us for consideration.

NYLA is being fostered in Redding in Shasta County, CA.
