ADOPTED – DANE

Male, Under 1 year, 42 lbs

DANE SEPT 2022

DANE is a rough-coated border collie, currently weighing 42 pounds and standing 24” inches at the shoulder.  He is under one-year-old and has been neutered.  Dane is a beautiful, tall, well-balanced boy with light green inquisitive eyes.  He is true black and white with no dilution spots.  Dane has black freckles on his nose.

DANE is fun, energetic, and very curious.  He loves to explore the yard on his own, and mostly stays close by his humans when outside.  Dane is both agile and athletic but has a puppy clumsiness.

DANE desires a family who will spend time with him and train him to his true potential, someone who has training experience and a positive training approach.  In his foster home, his training sessions have been short and several times a day with positive reinforcement and food treat reward.  He is learning very quickly to walk on leash; Dane’s leash training has progressed to a “hands free” leash.  Dane has progressed to a three-mile, one hour on-leash walk.  He could be a wonderful jogging or hiking partner.

That said, DANE’s recall still needs work.  He will come toward you when called, yet is cautious and will sometimes stay about 5 to 10 feet away from you when called.  So, when he is loose in the yard, Dane has a “drag leash” or is tethered on a long line.  On his terms at this point, he likes to be close.  He is slowly gaining confidence and comes up to you when you are sitting quietly reading or on a computer.  He wants to be your friend and desires interaction, but needs to grow in confidence about being touched.  He doesn’t react badly, but is simply cautious, wanting to come forward but needing a bit of time to do so.  He is willing to try new things; however, Dane is sometimes insecure.  He responds well to an excited and “fun” voice.  He will shut down to a raised or gruff voice or if over-disciplined.  As one sign of this stress, Dane will not take a food treat.  Dane is not yet toy-motivated.

DANE does very well in his crate, and he has not had any accidents in the house.  His crate is his sanctuary.  He is content in his crate for down time, to eat, and to sleep, and he sleeps soundly through the night.  When let outside in the morning, he will relieve himself on command with positive reinforcement.  Dane has not been left to run free unsupervised in the house.  Currently, he displays some nervousness when riding in a car.  With time, patient training, practice, and maturity, he will overcome his nervousness.

DANE wants to be playful with his foster brother and has shown absolutely no aggressive behavior. He is a “follower.”  He would do well with a family who has a second or elderly dog in the household.  He has shown no interest in squirrels or cats.  Dane has not been exposed to babies, toddlers, or small children.

DANE is looking for an active family who will include him in ALL their activities, someone with training skills and experience, and who will support him in becoming the very best dog he can be.

DANE is micro-chipped, spayed, heart worm negative and on preventative, and up to date on vaccinations. If you have an approved Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions Adoption Application and wish to inquire about DANE, please email us at Adoptions@norcalbcrescue.org. If you have an approved adoption application with Border Collie Rescue of Northern California let us know and we will request it be forwarded to us for consideration.

DANE is being fostered in Loomis in Placer County, CA.
