ASH (52 pounds of Border collie / Great Pyrenees) has been put on this earth to be petted. She gets petted when she sits, while we are walking, and when we cuddle up on the couch. When I stop she gives me that soulful look with those big brown eyes and the petting continues. Because she has such long legs I don’t even need to bend over to pet her, unless of course when she wants belly rubs. And she LOVES belly rubs! ASH lets us know when anyone is approaching the yard, comes to the door or enters the house. As she tells me, “It’s my job to protect my home and surroundings.”
ASH loves people, but she needs to be introduced slowly and on her terms. Once she trusts she is fine, but it takes some patience while letting her do the approaching. Treats help, but pets, when she is ready, are the way to her heart. It is the same with other dogs, slow introductions while keeping the excitement levels down until each knows the other. We have two other dogs in the house and she does well with both, but really loves her foster sister Jessie (also available). They are always paired up. ASH is a great big sister to Jessie, who happens to be deaf with limited vision in her one blue eye. They keep each other occupied; they love to run, play and wrestle all day long. Doesn’t matter the weather, rain or shine they love being together. ASH even tolerates Jessie if she curls up in ASH’s crate, which is really saying something because that is HER safe place.
Inside ASH would rather be close to her humans, but outside she really does enjoy playing with other dogs. She prefers dogs that can match her energy and tolerate physical play (roughhousing if you will). She will chase the ball around a bit. She likes to toss it to herself, roll around on the ground with it, and eventually give it back so the cycle can start all over again. She is not big on bones or other toys. She will occasionally chew her bone but mostly just lies with it and doesn’t miss it if one of the other dogs has snagged it.
ASH would love to have a play buddy but would also do ok as an only pet. If an only pet her family will need to spend a lot of extra time with her, accompany her outside and include her in all the family activities. ASH will need a cat-free environment. She doesn’t realize her size and strength will jump up on people, so we would caution against a home with small children.
ASH has a beautiful, soft medium coat with a black wisdom spot on top of her head. She is smart, loving and knows sit, come and even “Ashley – No.” She hears that when she counter surfs mostly. She loves to swipe food and pot holders off said counter. Her GP side definitely shows with her protective nature so we are looking for an experienced adopter with this type behavior. Unfortunately ASH does not travel well. She gets carsick on short or long trips and dislikes getting in the car. Lots of coaxing and bribes will eventually get her in. If you think you can keep up with her wish to be petted ALL THE TIME then ASH could be just the dog for you.
