Named BETTY WHITE because she came to us on Betty White’s birthday, our BETTY WHITE is a 4-year-old, 45 pound beauty. And like Betty White of stage & screen & animal welfare fame, our BETTY WHITE is young at heart, playful & silly like a puppy, always entertaining with her antics. Betty is simply delightful! She always has a smile on her face, even when she first came into rescue & had little reason to smile. Betty had been hit by a car & a good samaritan followed her into a field after her accident & got her to help. Shelter staff took her immediately to an emergency vet, where it was discovered that Betty suffered some broken ribs. And anyone who has ever had one broken rib knows how painful that can be! Betty needed a place to rest & relax for weeks while her ribs healed, & that’s where we came in. Betty has been a stellar patient; we included some photos of her from her first vet visit to illustrate her good nature. She was happy to greet everyone & be examined without one bit of ill will, even when she was painful. And we’ve included video of her romping with one of her foster sisters to illustrate how beautifully she has healed.
BETTY is a soft, kind dog. She is sensitive, & doesn’t like to think she is wrong, yet she is trusting & not truly fearful. If she learns she has done something she shouldn’t–like dash through the door or gate when she has been told to wait–she backs up & puts on a sorry face–but she quickly switches back to a smile & wiggle. Did we mention her adorable wiggle? An Australian shepherd/border collie mix, Betty does not have a tail, & she has an Aussie’s “fluffy” rear. And does this girl use that fluffy backend to get a laugh, especially when she thinks she needs to please! Betty loves to play with her foster sister, who is also a playful dog. They will romp endlessly. Betty has tried to play with the elderly male, who has no use for her silliness. He is tolerant, & after a few minutes, Betty gives up & walks away. She would love to have another playful dog to live with, so we hope to find her a home with such a dog. Despite her playful nature with dogs, she doesn’t know how to play with toys & is even a little worried when her foster mom throws toys. She does love to chew deer antlers & enjoys a stuffed Kong when she is enclosed in her pen. (Because Betty needed more room than a crate afforded during her recovery, she is not crate-trained. We’re working on that.)
BETTY will walk on a leash without too much pulling, but she weaves back-&-forth. Because she has been rested for several months, she will need to build back up to her natural stamina for long walks & hikes. She knows “sit,” “wait” (but sometimes she conveniently “forgets”), & “here.” She has a natural drop, but doesn’t yet know a “down” command reliably. She has not had an accident in her foster home. She is very treat-motivated. We don’t know how she is with cats.
