JACK

Male, 11.5 years, 50 lbs

JACK is a fluffy puffball senior border collie looking for a soft landing spot with a loving family that will pet him and love on him. We figure JACK to be about 11.5 years of age. He is a long-haired rough coat that weighs in at about 50 pounds. He gets along with the other dogs in the house but doesn’t engage with the adult dogs when they want to play. He & Coral, a former puppy foster, were especially tight. They loved hanging out together, cuddling during down time, and traveling about the yard during free time. They really enjoy played “bookends” to their foster dad, jumping up on the couch to join him to watch ballgames and get pets (not necessarily in that order).

JACK prefers human companionship. He is happiest when his is with his family being played with and loved on. The more time you spend with him the better. When sitting in my lounge chair we will excitedly come over, get his pets, lie down next to you for a bit, then get back up for more attention. When outside he follows us all over the yard. If you stop moving, he will expect to be petted. If you sit down, he will be very pleased to drop his head in your lap for…you guessed it…pets.

ROUTINE, in all aspects of his life, WILL BE KEY for JACK. He knows outside is for potty but will have his senior moments, resulting in an accident if you aren’t paying attention. He did well when he had access to the doggy door. It took him a couple days to get the hang of it, but once he did he’d let himself out to potty and enjoy soaking up the rays on our secure deck. Without the doggy door access we let him out for regular potty breaks. He sleeps peacefully overnight in his crate, and also travels well.

JACK doesn’t hear very well, or at least doesn’t always acknowledge hearing us, particularly at longer distances or when not in line of sight. He does better at close range, particularly inside. It will take time for him to settle in. Thing like consistent placement of a crate, dog bed, and food and water bowls work for JACK. As he learns and understands what and where, the easier things will be for you and JACK.

JACK has had two seizures since he has been in rescue. One was at his first vet visit. The other was when he went to the groomer. In both instances he was not with a foster family member. At the groomer it happened as soon as the water touched his body. He has been on anti-seizure meds since and he has not had an episode in about three months. We have even rinsed him off a few times with no issues.

JACK does like toys. His favorites are the hard toys like Nyla bones and buffalo horns. He loves to eat so it will be important to keep plenty of treats around. JACK gets very excited at mealtime. He has all his meals in his crate. He would benefit from being able to follow the lead of another chill dog in the house to help with the routine.
