I have a Border Collie mix I can’t keep long term. I’m looking for help re-homing him. He needs a place without other dogs (big may be OK, not sure) or small children. I live in Newberg Oregon, but will travel almost anywhere to find him a good placement.
I adopted Eddie, almost 5 years ago, when he was 2. He was an adoption return. Between what I see and what my agility instructor says, I think he was not well treated as a puppy. While it has been improving with training and activity, he’s always had herding/nipping behavior.
When I adopted him, I was a widower with an elderly Aussie/Lab, who died a few months after the adoption. Eddie did fine with her. I remarried in December of 2020. My wfe brought a Shih Tzu (Frankie) and some grandsons into our life. In general, Eddie was friendly with the grandsons (7 and 10 at the time). He did nip the older one on the cheek, with a small skin break. The grandson had run across the room and jumped onto an ottoman landing with his face an inch from Eddie. Eddie also “grabs” Frankie by the head every now and then. This didn’t start right away when we introduced the dogs. It typically happens every few months. 2 weeks ago, he grabbed Frankie and injured his left eye, requiring removal. None of these grabs and nips are aggressive. They are responses.
I have worked with a local trainer to improve his behavior. We’ve also been taking agility lessons for the last 3 years. I’ve done 2 trials and 2 fun runs. This has made him more confident and less tense. At class, he is comfortable with the adults and the other dogs. When we started, he frequently gave other dogs the “border collie stare.” This has gone away.
While he has been fine with my 2 year old granddaughter, I have another granddaughter coming in November. After Frankie’s injury, I can’t justify the risks to them. I can’t keep him separate from Frankie long term. I can manage in the near term, but the current environment isn’t good for Eddie or my family. I can make it work for a few months. Eddie really needs a home with no small children or small dogs.
