Shuman is a 1.5 y/o Male Border Collie mix. He weighs about 50 lbs., is neutered, microchipped and UTD on vaccines and Heartworm/flea & tick prevention.
Shuman came from a Central California Shelter where he was shut down and scared. It took animal control a couple of weeks to catch him and while in the shelter, he wouldn’t eat or come out of the corner for affection. It was very likely he would have been euthanized had his foster parents not taken a chance to rehabilitate him. He is one lucky pup!
Today, Shuman has blossomed. He plays well with other polite dogs and is good on a leash. He is crate trained and he has been learning some commands while with his foster family. He knows Sit and Down and Crate and is working on Stay and waiting at the thresholds. Shuman has gained some confidence and trust, so his true puppy-like personality is showing through. He has begun to walk up to neighbors for pets and treats while out on walks and greet his foster family at the door with a wagging tail. Shuman loves to play ball with the other dogs too and he adores the neighbor’s little girl. This sweetie has a really good off switch and will relax most of the day once he’s gotten his morning exercise of ball play and neighborhood walks.
Shuman may be a little standoffish at first but once he learns to love and trust you, he’ll show his fun, silly nature. He’ll need a gentle hand and time though. He is frightened by loud popping noises and quick movements and reacts to these by hiding or running. For this reason, Shuman will need a secure environment with a very well fenced yard. He should be kept on a leash (even in the fenced yard) at first in his new home for assurance. Shu would do best in a home without cats or chickens.
We think Shuman has made incredible gains while in foster care and will continue to be a Good Boy with the right experienced family. He may even ‘sit pretty’ and put his paws on you for affection which is so endearing. When he does this, you’ll know you’ve become his person. Please consider this boy. He deserves a soft warm bed with you to cuddle with!
